Today, we are going to discuss Negative Attention Syndrome.
The underlying desire of all individuals is love. Human beings inherently need unconditional love from the moment they are born. If a child does not receive love unconditionally and directly, he or she will go for the next best thing---negative attention. This often manifests itself into behavior by adults that includes harassment, grandiose claims, and delusions of grandeur.
Individuals that carry these symptoms into adulthood generally exhibit the following character traits:
1. Lying
2. Claims of importance (to accomodate for their poor self image)
3. Instigating arguements, particularly with people they don't know
4. Claiming vicitimization (when in fact they are actually the aggressor).
5. Failed personal relationships
6. Failed business ventures
7. Embarassing others publically
8. Being over emotional
9. Being really needy
10. Verbally abusive
Adults who are bullies try to push others down to feel a sense of power. For one reason or another, the constant demeaning of other people makes the bully feel good about him or herself. When the bully feels good then they feel as if they are “better than other”. This bullying not only brings attention to them but also brings a sense of personal gain that is often lacking in the other aspects of their life. It is not uncommon for these 'bullies' to have failed marriages, failed businesses, bankruptcies, and many outstanding SBA loans.
Extensive psychotherapy in San Antonio, Texas can help but only if the patient makes a conscious effort to stop the behavior.
