Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is a mental illness characterized by a pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking, including an excessive need for approval and inappropriate seductiveness, usually beginning in early adulthood. This may manifest itself through excessive 'advertisement' through extra curricular activities that place the patient in the public light (i.e. the editor of a review or a political consultant).
The essential feature of the histrionic personality disorder is an excessive pattern of emotionality and attention-seeking behavior. These individuals are lively, dramatic, enthusiastic, and flirtatious (tending towards the excessive). They may be inappropriately sexually provocative (like have sex in an ambulance), express strong emotions with an impressionistic style, and be easily influenced by others.
