Private Eye Smear

Some private investigators routinely engage in ‘smear campaigns’ to discredit the perceived enemies of their clients, whether those persons are family members or spouses of a client, business associates, witnesses in a civil or criminal proceeding, public officials, private citizens, or members of law enforcement, including State and Federal Prosecutors.

Private eyes have been known in recent years to approach a neighbor or business associate of someone they are trying to discredit, falsely representing themselves as an FBI agent or other member of law enforcement. This ruse frequently goes unchallenged by the person they scam, as most Americans believe that no one would have the audacity to go around flashing false law enforcement credentials, an act that is a Federal crime.

Some private eyes even use internet smear campaigns for their clients, where they publish false information intended to defame a victim.
